Educating People About Dogs

What shelter dogs need the most has absolutely nothing to do with brick and mortar. It doesn't matter to dogs what colour the paint on the wall is, what modern design a shelter has, or that you can even feed and water them without the need to open the gates. It's not the fabric of the building that makes a difference, it's the people inside the building, the quality of the staff, and it's the caregivers that will make that difference. Why are we building more shelters when we were told that the spay/neuter campaigns were supposed to take care of the overpopulation? We should be closing doors, not opening new ones to even bigger shelters... When technology takes over the details of feeding a dog, the dog loses the human touch, the hand that would have touched him and the face that would have smiled at him. A better solution would be to educate people in our communities about the necessity of training their dogs to live in a world of people and educate them about the na...

Dog Nutritional Products Should Include a Detoxifier

As we domesticate the dog more and more each day, canine health problems continue to more closely follow human disorders. As the natural dog is separated further and further from their wild environment their health problems increase dramatically. One of the major contributors to this canine health problem is the constant exposure to harmful toxins. The most damaging of these are the metals aluminum, lead, mercury, arsenic, and cadmium. They contribute to everything form dog teeth cleaning problems and dog bad breath to worsening allergies and skin diseases to serious life threatening illnesses such as cancer, arthritis, kidney failure, congestive heart disease, liver diseases, diabetes, deteriorate defenses against infections bacterial, viral and fungal diseases. In our modern day society the domesticated dog is exposed to these harmful toxic metals in alarming amounts. The natural dog was not exposed to these toxins and is not able to defend himself as humans can in their new dom...

Dealing With a Dog Bite

Dogs Are Fantastic Pets Dogs are loyal companions and bring a great deal of joy to a lot of people, but not every dog is friendly. If a dog does not belong to you or you are not its handler then you should be respectful of the dog and the wishes of its master. Today, there are about 75 million dogs in the United States. About 4.7 million dog bites are reported each year. That means that about 6.5% of dogs will bite a person seriously enough to be reported. Out of those 4.7 million reported bites, about 800,000 or one out of six is serious enough to need medical attention. So, each year 1% of dogs will bite somebody seriously enough that they need to go to the hospital. And those figures are assuming that each dog bite comes from a different dog. Most dogs are well-behaved and are not vicious, but people still need to know how to interact with dogs so they stay safe around them and prevent being hurt by a dog bite. Most bites are not the result of vicious and aggressive dogs, but ...

Choosing a Dog Breed: Large Dogs

The only real dogs are big dogs. Perhaps only a large dog could have made the incredible journey from Scotland to Yorkshire Lassie undertook in "Lassie Come Home." The original Lassie movie was not only the best Lassie film, but one of the greatest children's films ever made. It starred a very young Elizabeth Taylor and Roddy McDowall. The faithful and determined Lassie was played by a Rough Collie named Pal. If you are considering buying or adopting a large dog, it is important to research the different dog breeds beforehand. Barking Dog Problem

Excessive Barking Dogs sometimes just do not want to be quiet and neighbors not always are that tolerant - I know this from my own experience. My intentions in this article are not to stop your dog barking completely but rather to eliminate the excessive barking which is very annoying. You would rather not want your dog be quiet when your house is getting burgled in the middle of the night, right?:) First thing you need to do is to find out why the dog is barking excessively. Here are several reasons why dog barks: • Warning - normal behavior when there is somebody at the door or is passing near to your house. It is dog's way of saying: "I am protecting this area so you better leave now." The sound of this bark is usually sharp, loud and authoritative. • Anxiety - many dogs bark to calm down - it is kind of self- soothing "methods" for them. This kind of barking is common for dogs with separation anxiety. • Excitement • Attention - seeking - like children dogs...

The Dog Thinker and The Truth

I love dogs, so I often think, how, what, where and why dogs do what they do? My mission, has been to observe, and be active in my community, and anywhere to encourage dog awareness. Why? Because dogs need us. They depend on responsible humans to care for them. But as a dog thinker, I know more. It's the humans who NEED the dog more! What made me decide to write this article? Well, I am a dog thinker, and am keen on dogs' behavior wherever they are. At home, on walks, at the park, at the beach, in a car, on a flat-bed truck, packed behind a motorcycle, just sitting, or laying down, standing and barking, and just being a dog.. Let me make it clear, I'm not a dog watcher, but a dog thinker. Every dog that crosses my path, my thoughts start considering what they may be experiencing. For example, I think, about the information, dogs are picking-up smelling as they walk along, or what makes them bark at some people and not others. I observe and think how human behavior change,...
